Also #OnThisDay @stonewalluk was formally launched (in 1989); one year to the day since Section 28 became law.

On 11 September 1988, at a meeting held in Sir Ian McKellen’s house in Limehouse, the basic aims were drawn up in a document dubbed the Second Limehouse Declaration. On 24 May 1989, the new group sent a press release to the LGBT press announcing the founding of the Stonewall Group. It was set up as a company and a charity, the Iris Trust, was announced at the same time, with a remit to raise funds for research and to support the work of the Stonewall Group.

An announcement to the mainstream press followed in September. The Iris Trust’s first fundraising event was a performance of Bent at the Adelphi Theatre in London, starring Sir Ian McKellen and Lord Michael Cashman. The performance raised £25,000 and this became the seed money for the Stonewall Group’s first office at 5 Rector Street, London N1. In August 1989, Tim Barnett was announced as the first executive director.

The founding members and/or trustees were: Peter Ashman, Deborah Ballard, Michael Cashman, Duncan Campbell, Olivette Cole-Wilson, Fiona Cunningham Reid, Simon Fanshawe, Dorian Jabri, Ian McKellen, Matthew Paris, Lisa Power, Dr Peter Rivas, Pam St Clement and Jennie Wilson.

#OnThisDay in 1988, 'Section 28' became UK law. Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 said that local authorities 'shall not...promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship'. It was repealed in 2000 in Scotland and in 2003 in England and Wales.

The prominent gay writer and journalist Matthew Todd (was editor at Attitude magazine for many years) was in school in those days, and looks back now, at the effect it had. Learn about his story via the video link below

Today is Pansexual & Panromantic Visibility Day!

The 24th May marks Pansexual and Panromantic Visibility Day. These are two terms that not everyone might be conscious of so an awareness and visibility day such as this is really important. So what do these two terms mean?

Pansexual people – people who are attracted to others regardless of their gender identity or biological sex.

Panromantic people – people who are romantically (not necessarily sexually) attracted to others regardless of their gender identity or biological sex.

So is pansexual the same as bisexual? Not exactly – bisexual (bi) and pansexual (pan) are similar but there is a difference. Bisexual means to be attracted to your own gender and other genders (some people think it means to be attracted to both men and women, but this isn’t always the case and can include non-binary people). Pansexual means to be attracted to all genders so someone’s gender doesn’t factor into attraction when someone is pan.

Why does any of this matter? Well, imagine if there’s a part of who you are and it doesn’t have a name, or people assume that this means something else or that you mean something different. This can lead to feeling really ostracised or judged by communities and society as a whole. It could mean that there’s a part of yourself that has no definition and that society has no understanding about this important aspect of yourself.

It’s important to remember that being a pansexual or a pan romantic person doesn’t define all of a person. It’s just one aspect of them. But it’s an important part to understand and respect. Difference and diversity is what makes the world a fascinating place to be a part of.

Congratulations to the @churchofscotland (CoS)!
The General Assembly have agreed to allow Ministers / Deacons to apply for licensing to perform same-sex marriages! What a milestone in the church's history!! 274 for and 136 against!!

29 CoS presbyteries (out of 41) voted in favour of it back in 2021. Today, it was covered in Session 4 under "Report of the Committee on Overtures and Cases" and at 11:36, it became Church law!

The legislation is ‘permissive’ – ministers and deacons are being given permission and no-one will be constrained to conduct a same-sex marriage.

It may be a while till CoS's first same-sex marriage takes place, but we are so happy at this forward move for equality recognising loving, committed and faithful same-sex unions! We want to thank in particular: Craig Dobney, Peter Johnson, Bryan Kerr, Scott Rennie, Paul Middleton and Lesley Stewart for their courage and their words of affirmation in favour of this legislation as well as everyone who's persevered! We rejoice in the contribution its LGBTQ+ members, elders, deacons and ministers make to the mission of God in the world.
