Happy Guncles Day!!! A day for gay uncles, lesbian aunts, trans uncles and trans aunts!! 🏳️‍🌈🎉

Bet you didn’t know about this date (happening on the second Sunday of August). It is a relatively new awareness day in the LGBTQ+ calendar created by C.J. Hatter and Simon Dunn. The holiday is mostly celebrated online with gay aunts, uncles, and other LGBTQ+ relatives as well as by parents celebrating their LGBTQ+ siblings, sharing gratitude for their presence in the children's lives.

Are you the best guncle or gay aunt in the world? Be sure to post pictures with your nieces and nephews and tell us why you’re the best!

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” - Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV)

Psalm 139 helps us connect with the Divine energy that shortens the distance between folks and communities, between our lived experiences and our bodies.

I was in high school when I first came to know this particular psalm. A substitute teacher—who was also a youth minister at a local Southern Baptist Church—encouraged me to memorize it. Little did I know, it would grow to be an important reminder of who I am and who I was called to be during a time of great difficulty when my gender nonconforming Masculine of Center Trans Latinx body was an apparent threat.

I have had to reach back into the folds of my memory to recall that my created being—though different in this world to and for many—is wonderfully made.

To sit with this psalm and really breathe in the words that I am known and loved and created wonderfully is not only in opposition to what I am told each day, but it helps me lean into an imaginative hope that maybe one day our communities will know us as the Divine knows us, will love us as the Divine loves us and will call to us from the deepest places of our gifts and graces just as the Divine does.

I think Lent is a season where we can relax and begin to breathe in the words of this psalm.

For many Trans, gender nonconforming persons and people of colour, we spend a long time getting to know ourselves. We have been socialised to believe lies about ourselves...that we are not made in the image of the Divine, that we are deeply flawed, that we are in need of repair.

What’s amazing about breathing in the words of this psalm during the season of Lent is that we have a chance to rest in trust that the Divine knows us in all of our complexities, is holding us in the deepest darknesses of our twisted journeys and is calling us to become all we are called to become. As the psalmist says, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

If you are a young person waiting on a text, or an email, or an envelope … remember that it is one moment in your life. Whatever the news it is part of your story, and in that story there are ddifferent paths.

If you get the news you were hoping for or expecting we rejoice with you.
If your news is not what you needed or wanted, we think of you and pray for you. Just breathe …

There are lots of different routes to get where you want to be in life … some are straight and some are full of twists and turns, but they all end up at a destination. Stay on the road.

Today … enjoy the moment if you did well. If you didn’t, stay calm. Each of you need to support your friends if they need it … be gracious and kind if you did as well as you expected and remember others may not have achieved as expected.

And remember, no matter what, that you are loved. You are loved by God, by those around you, and by us. You are always important and worth it!

To parents and carers … love your young people no matter what … they need you to stand by them. They will get there!

To our teachers … thank you … we know you did all you could and whether you are happy or disappointed you have the strength to do it all again this year! Keep going …

What does abomination mean in the Bible?

Best comeback ever by Stitch to word “abomination”. 😂

The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic; not English. It was the Hebrew word "toevah" which was later translated into "abomination" and featured 117 times in the Old Testament (OT). Unlike our modern definition of "abomination", "toevah" doesn't refer to something that is morally wrong. Instead, it is in reference to the violation of a boundary within a custom or something that's taboo for God's chosen people, in this case with the Hebrews.

This translation of "toevah" is also confirmed through other examples in the Bible. For example, Shepherds (Genesis 46:34) and Egyptians eating with Hebrews (Genesis 43:32) were classed as 'abominations' to the Egyptians' customs. In Exodus 8:26, Moses even acknowledges to Pharaoh that the sacred Jewish worship to God was "toevah" (an abomination) to the Egyptians.

None of these are inherently sinful, so the word "abomination/toevah" simply means something allowed in one custom but prohibited by another - it wasn't a case of morality. These were the established ways for the Hebrews to set themselves apart from the surrounding nations as Holy people. So the use of the word "abomination" is not a sound basis to exclude LGBTQ+ people from the church.

Read more about it in our Leviticus Clobber Passage article.
